Lucy comes from the village of Caerlan in the Swansea Valley. At the age of nine Lucy gained a scholarship to Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester. Whilst at Chetham’s Lucy won the Mozart Prize for her quartet work and became principal viola of both Chetham’s Chamber and Symphony Orchestras.
In 1995 Lucy began her four-year BMus course at the Royal College of Music studying with Simon Rowland Jones and Ivo Van Der Werff. On graduating Lucy furthered her studies with the renowned soloist Philip Dukes.
Other prizes won include The Ffrancon Thomas Prize (National Youth Orchestra of Wales), a Foundation for Sports and the Arts Award and the Ryan Davies Memorial Prize. Lucy won the Mozart Prize for quartet work at Chetham’s and won at the Cambridge Symposium for String Quartets.
Lucy’s successful career in ‘classical’ music works in parallel with the ‘popular’ music and recording world having performed live and recorded with some of the most popular artists in the world including Lionel Richie, Diana Krall, Natalie Cole, Keane, Will Young, McFly, Andrea Bocelli, Il Divo, Shapeshifters, Kanye West, Take That and Korean superstars Shinee.
Lucy has featured on stage and in recordings with the very best talent from Wales including Dame Shirley Bassey, Bryn Terfel, Katherine Jenkins, Aled Jones, Michael Ball, Wynne Evans, Rebecca Evans, Gwyn Hughes Jones, John Owen Jones, Shan Cothi, Steve Balsamo, Rhydian, Sophie Evans and Only Men Aloud.
She has also performed on many TV programmes including Songs of Praise (BBC), Parkinson (ITV), Top of the Pops (BBC), Children in Need (BBC), X Factor (ITV) and is regularly in the top London studios recording soundtracks for TV and film productions including Downton Abbey, Johnny English, Young Hannibal and adverts for Pepsi, Homeserve and Aristoc.
Lucy has recently been a regular player in a host of West End productions including Lion King, Phantom of the Opera and Oliver, and has taken part in two large touring shows Aspects of Love in 2007 and the 25th Anniversary Production of Les Miserables in 2010.
A versatile musician on stage and in the studio Lucy also has a long standing relationship with Dexys Midnight Runners, having toured with them in 2003 promoting the ‘Best Of’ album. Recently Dexys have recorded a new album on which Lucy is featured and she will be swapping the viola for the violin to hit the road again with them in 2012 – Come on Eileen!
While not playing music Lucy is a keen runner and is currently training for the Cardiff Ultra Marathon (20th May) to raise funds for the Stepping Stones Appeal supporting lung cancer research at Velindre Cancer Centre, Cardiff.
